GOING FOR AN INTERVIEW

Interview image

  • Find out where to go and how to get there, and research as much as you can about the company.
  • Think about what you have to offer to the job, e.g. keen to do the job; willing to learn; get on well with people; never late; good at working on your own; anything else.
  • Make sure you check the appointment details and dress smartly.

Take with you:

  • A note of the name, address and telephone number of the company and the name of the person you are to see.
  • An introduction card from Connexions or Job Centre if you have one.
  • A copy of your CV if you have one.
  • Money for fares and a phone call to the firm in case you are held up on the way.
  • Any certificates or letters of reference you have and your Record of Achievement
  • Any information you were sent before the interview.
  • A pen, pencil and rubber in case you have to do any tests.

When you get to the Interview

  • Although everybody feels nervous in an interview, try to stay calm. The more interviews you do, the more relaxed and confident you will become.
  • Listen carefully to the questions you are asked and respond by speaking clearly, and try to answer the questions fully.

These are the sorts of things you might be asked...

  • Why you are interested in the job?
  • What do you do in your spare time?
  • What training or other jobs have you done?

Think about what you want to ask...

  • About the job
  • Where you would work
  • What training you would have
  • What day or block release classes you could attend at college
  • About the wages, hours, and holidays You may also be given a test, be shown around the place where you would work, and be introduced to people on the staff. This is all part of the interview, so be friendly, remain interested and ask questions.

Good Luck!

What if I am Offered the Job?

  • If you are offered a job at the interview, or by telephone, you don't have to decide at once. You can ask for a day to think it over. Reply quickly to job offers made by letter.
  • For help with letters, form filling or practicing job interviews ask teachers, your Connexions Personal Advisor, a Grapevine Information and Advice Worker or your Youth Worker for individual help.
